CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Three Richmond players reached double-figures tonight as the University of Richmond women's basketball team defeated Virginia 66-57 tonight at University Hall. With just the program's second win over UVA, the Spiders, who were down seven points at the half, improve to 3-0 while the Cavaliers fall to 3-2.
"We played tentative in the first half," commented Richmond head coach Joanne Boyle. "Our players challenged themselves at halftime and responded during the second half. Everyone had to step up tonight for us to win this game, and they did."
Senior Kate Flavin (Englewood, Colo.) led all scorers with 18 points, all coming in the second half, and was one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards. Sophomore Christina Campion (Hamilton Square, N.J.) connected on 7-8 field goal attempts and ended with 16 points while classmate DeUnna Hendrix (Kokomo, Ind.) scored a career-high 14.
The Cavaliers were led by Brandi Teamer with 16 points.
During the first half, the Cavaliers took a 7-6 lead with 14:07 on the clock and held the advantage the remainder of the period. Holding a five-point edge, the Spiders got within one off consecutive jumpers from junior Saona Chapman (Voluntown, Conn.) and Hendrix.
The Cavaliers ended the half with three straight free throws and held a 25-18 lead at the break.
In second half action, Teamer scored Virginia's first nine points and the Cavaliers established their largest lead of the game (8). Following a 9-0 run, starting with a lay-up from Flavin, the Spiders took their first lead (35-34) since the game's opening minutes with 15:40 remaining. Shortly after, a four-point Richmond lead was cut to two, but the Spiders scored ten unanswered points and held their largest lead of the game (12) with just under nine minutes left in the game.
The Spiders were held scoreless during a three-minute span and Virginia was within one point after an old-fashioned three-point play from LaTonya Blue. Over the following minute and a half, Richmond rebuilt its lead to six but after a pair of free throws from Blue following a technical foul on Richmond head coach Joanne Boyle, the Cavaliers were down by only a basket.
The Spiders hit 11 of their final 12 free throws in the final three minutes of play and claimed the 66-57 win.
Richmond faces Georgetown on Wednesday, December 1 at 5:00 p.m. in a double-header with the Spider men's team.
