AMHERST, Mass. - The 10th-ranked Richmond field hockey team moved its win streak to 10 games with a 4-0 win over Temple in opening round action of the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament Friday. The Spiders, who helped head coach Ange Bradley garner her 100th win of her career, are now 16-2 on the season, while Temple falls to 9-11 overall.
"We are excited about the outcome of tonight's game," Bradley said. "We got the result we wanted even though it was not one of the best games we have played."
The Spiders, the top seed in the 2004 A-10 Championships, garnered their first goal in the sixth minute of the contest when junior Colleen Wevodau put one in the box for the first time this season. Wevodau, who now has three points on the season, took a pass off a restart into the circle then got it past Temple's Erin Conroy for the eventual game-winner.
Twelve minutes later junior Holly Cram found the back of the cage for the 26th time this season. The Glasgow, Scotland, native used a penalty corner opportunity to put Richmond in front 2-0.
With about five minutes left in the first half Cram scored on the second of Richmond's two first-half penalty corners. Juniors Allie Howard and Michelle La Force notched the assists on the play as the push and stick stop for the attack.
The Spiders allowed three shots in the first half, but none were on goal. Richmond fired nine in the half, six on goal. In the second half the Spiders turned up their defense and did not allow a single shot by the Owls.
On offense the Spiders took six shots in the last 35 minutes and got one more goal past Conroy. Sophomore Amanda Florio netted the score on a long pass from Cram as Conroy came out to defend. Florio went past the keeper then found the cage for her seventh goal of the season.
The win moved Bradley's career mark to 100-43, including a 61-18 record as the Spiders' four-year leader.
"It is a great milestone for my career," Bradley said. "I really appreciate the team's effort to establish the mark for me. I hope we can go out and get 101 tomorrow."
Junior Michelle Swartz recorded her 10th shutout of the season, and has now blanked opponents over more than 365 consecutive minutes of action.
The Spiders will attempt to secure their third-straight tournament title tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 6, in the Championship finals at 5 p.m. Richmond will face second-seeded UMass, which topped Saint Joseph's 3-0 Friday evening.
