Women's Basketball Downs Dukes, 79-60

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Freshman Christina Campion grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds, one shy of the Atlantic 10 high for the season, in the University of Richmond's 79-60 win over Duquesne tonight at the Palumbo Center. With the win, the Spiders (18-8, 10-5) clinch the #2 spot in the conference's West Division and earn the automatic buy in the first round of the league championships.
Sophomore Saona Chapman led the Spiders with 24 points, connecting on four three-point baskets, and dished out six assists. Campion recorded her second consecutive double-double with 11 points. In addition, junior Kate Flavin and senior Amber Goppert both reached double-figures in the scoring column with 19 and ten, respectively.
The Dukes (15-12, 10-6) were led by senior Candace Futrell's 23 points.
Richmond opened the game with a 12-0 scoring run as the Dukes missed their first six shot attempts. Duquesne scored its first points of the game off Maria Stankevich's lay-up at the 15:58 mark.
The Dukes cut the deficit to single digits (23-14) in the midst of the Spiders' six minute scoring drought. Chapman's fast-break lay-up ended Richmond's dry spell with a fast-break lay-up with just over five minutes remaining in the half. The Spiders outscored the Duke's11-7 throughout the closing minutes and held a 36-21 halftime lead.
Duquesne cut the lead to single figures (nine) as they connected on four three-point baskets to start the second half. The Spiders held a slight 58-54 advantage but after a Duquesne timeout at the 6:13 point, Richmond connected on a trio of treys and extended its lead to 11 points.
In the final two minutes, the Spiders hit 10-of-12 free throws to earn the 79-60 win.
Richmond dished out 21 assists, the fourth time in five games that the Spiders have recorded 20+.
The Spiders play their final regular season game of the year on Sunday at 2 p.m. when they host St. Bonaventure. Richmond's two seniors will be recognized in a brief pre-game ceremony.
