Women's Basketball Drops 69-48 Decision to Colonials

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va.The University of Richmond women's basketball team suffered its fourth consecutive loss today, falling 69-48 to George Washington at the Robins Center. The Colonials have won eight straight and improve to 16-5, 9-1 in the conference while the Spiders fall to 13-8, 5-5 in the A-10 with their first home loss of the season.
Freshman Christina Campion (Hamilton Square, N.J.) led the Spiders with 14 points while sophomore Alison Mitchell (Annandale, Va.) added 12. Junior Kate Flavin (Englewood, Colo.) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
George Washington's Cathy Joens led the Colonials with 31 points off a career-high eight three-point baskets.
The Colonials built a double-digit lead early in the opening period as Richmond missed its first five shot attempts and committed five turnovers before Campion scored a lay-up at the 12:44 mark. Joens gave George Washington a 13-point lead with her fifth three-point basket of the half with just under seven minutes remaining.
George Washington ended the half with back-to-back treys and held a 39-22 advantage at the break.
The Spiders scored the first five points in the second half before the Colonials took their first 20-point lead off a three-point basket from Joens at the 15:03 mark. Over the following six minutes of play, Richmond went on a 17-6 scoring run to cut the lead to nine with ten minutes left to play.
George Washington responded, scoring ten unanswered points to take a 19-point lead with 3:39 on the clock. Valerie William's jumper gave the Colonials their largest lead of the game (23) before the final margin was set at 69-48.
Richmond outrebounded George Washington as the Spiders grabbed 39 rebounds to the Colonials' 31.
The Spiders shot just 7.7% (1-13) from beyond the arc while the Colonials connected on half (9-18) of their attempts.
This marks the first time since the 2001-02 season that the Spiders have lost four consecutive games.
Richmond is back in action at the Robins Center on Friday, February 13 when they host Dayton at 7 p.m.
