COLLEGE PARK, MD - Freshmen Robin Carter and Emily Applegate each posted straight-set victories and top-seeded Richmond claimed its second title in three seasons after defeating No. 2 Xavier on Sunday, 4-0, in the finals of the 2004 Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship, held at The Tennis Center at College Park.
Carter defeated Xavier senior Kate Weightman, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 4 flight while Applegate turned aside Emily Tuchscherer at the No. 5 spot, 6-1, 6-2. Spiders junior Courtney Klein rounded out the individual wins for UR with a 6-3, 6-1 win versus Musketeers freshman Jackie Vilines.
"I would like to congratulate Xavier on a terrific match and a great season," said Richmond head coach Mark Wesselink. "We are a very young team with three freshmen in our singles lineup and we played a very difficult schedule this year. I thought our team showed it was match tested and displayed a lot of character today. I am really proud of the way they performed throughout the A-10 Championship."
Richmond jumped out to a 1-0 lead after securing the doubles point as the tandems of freshman Beatrice Grasu and junior Lindsay Cox and Carter and Klein recorded 8-2 wins at the Nos. 1 and 3 doubles flights, respectively. Xavier junior Lauren Clary was leading Grasu, 6-2, 4-4 at the No. 1 singles flight before Richmond clinched the title as the Musketeers finished second in the Championship for the second time in three years, equaling their highest-ever finish.
In the third-place consolation match, senior Danira Penic improved to 3-0 on the weekend after winning in straight sets (6-1, 6-1) versus Christine Liehr of Massachusetts at the No. 1 position as Temple edged third-seed Massachusetts, 4-3.
In the fifth-place match Sunday morning, Nazli Gencsoy and Anastasia Skavronskaia registered straight-set wins at the Nos. 2 and 5 singles flights to lead George Washington past Duquesne, 4-0. Dayton defeated Fordham, 7-0, in the seventh-place contest as junior Erin Krikland shrugged off an ankle injury sustained during the second set to defeat Sophomore Christina Papa at the No. 1 position, 6-1, 6-2.
