Women's Lacrosse Dominates Massachusetts 19-7

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Seniors Libby Berlacher (Villanova, Pa.) and Polly Purcell (Ellicott City, Md.) each scored six goals to lead the University of Richmond women's lacrosse team to a 19-7 win over Massachusetts this afternoon at Lacrosse Field. The Spiders improve 6-5, 2-1 in the conference while Massachusetts falls to 2-7, 1-1.
Junior Kristen Habicht (Baltimore, Md.) recorded a hat trick with five goals and senior Jen Cielewich (Severna Park, Md.) added a pair of scores. Sophomore Allison Nuzzi (Baltimore, Md.) registered a five assists. Berlacher and Nuzzi combined for four goals.
Six players scored for the Minutewomen with Tracey Drown leading the team with two tallies.
Richmond scored the game's first eight goals as both Purcell and Habicht recorded hat tricks in the opening 15 minutes. Massachusetts got on the scoreboard at the 14:07 point with Drown's first goal.
Berlacher and Purcell each added one more goal in the first half before Massachusetts scored with just under three minutes remaining to set the halftime score at 10-2.
In the second half, Habicht gained possession on the opening draw and scored her fourth goal just 15 second into the period. The teams exchanged scored throughout the following ten minutes before Richmond rattled off five unanswered goals, three coming from Berlacher.
Massachusetts scored twice in a two-minute span and Purcell set the final margin at 19-7 with a score at the 1:08 mark.
Sophomore Jackie Swansburg (Beverly, Mass.) made seven saves while all three Massachusetts goalies saw game action. Remy Bacaicoa recorded the Minutewomen's two saves.
Richmond had 18 draw controls and 16 ground balls in the win.
The Spiders are back in action on Sunday afternoon, taking on #4 Duke at 2 p.m.
