Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Xavier

CINCINNATI, OHIO - The University of Richmond baseball team split its doubleheader with Xavier University this afternoon in Cincinnati, Ohio. A.J. Board tallied two hits, including a three-run home run in the first contest as the Spiders won 5-2 and the Musketeers out hit Richmond 7-1 in the second game as they clinched the 4-0 victory.
Thomas Martin pitched six innings and posted his fifth win of the season as he allowed only five hits and two runs in the first game of the doubleheader. Xavier's Bill Konecny took the loss after allowing six hits and five runs in six innings pitched.
In the first contest, Bryan Pritz went 2-for-3 and Ben Zeskind registered two hits and one RBI for Richmond. Brett Smith went 2-for-3 for the Musketeers. Board's dinger in the opening inning knocked in Zeskind, who had doubled to left field and Jim Fasano who had walked.
After four scoreless innings, Richmond added two more runs in the sixth. John Cronin singled to left field and knocked in Chris Dolan, who had reached base on an error by Xavier's pitcher. Cronin later crossed the plate on a single by Zeskind. Xavier responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.
In the second game, the Muskaeteers' Sam Freund allowed only one hit and shutout the Spiders for his third win of the season. Freshman Rob Berzinskas took the loss for the Spiders after allowing four runs on five hits.
Xavier posted one run a piece in the first four innings and UR's Zeskind tallied the team's lone hit in the sixth inning.
The Spiders and Musketeers conclude their series Sunday at Noon.
