NORWICH, Conn. - Freshman Rob Berzinskas threw his second career complete-game victory as the University of Richmond baseball team defeated Duquesne 4-2 in the first round of the 2004 Atlantic 10 Championships this afternoon in Norwich, Conn.
Jim Fasano led the Spiders with one hit and two RBI. Five other UR players contributed one hit apiece. The Dukes were led by lead off hitter Dan Schwartzbauer with two hits and one RBI.
Fasano ripped a two-run double to left center in the first inning and posted the first runs of the contest. His hit scored Bryan Pritz and Ben Zeskind who opened the inning with a hit-by-pitch and a walk, respectively. Fasano later scored on a sac fly by designated hitter Alex Wotring.
The Spiders added another run in the third inning, when Pritz singled to center field and crossed the plate on a single to right center by fellow senior A.J. Board.
The Dukes responded in the seventh with two runs on two hits when Luke Taggart drew a walk with bases loaded, allowing Steve Maiolo to score. Maiolo had opened the frame with a single to center field. Jonathan Kelly scored the second run on a single down the left field line by Schwartzbauer.
Berzinskas allowed only two runs on six hits and struck out seven. Bob Reifschneider took the loss for UD after allowing four runs on six hits.
