HOUSTON, Texas - Former University of Richmond All-American Tim Stauffer retired the side in order and needed only 10 pitches - eight strikes - to coast through the second inning in Sunday afternoon's Major League Baseball Futures All-Star Game held as part of this week's All-Star festivities at Houston's Minute Maid Ballpark.
Stauffer, the fourth overall selection in the 2003 major league draft by the San Diego Padres, struck out two batters before inducing a ground-out to first base in a commanding performance.
The two-time Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Year has appeared in 17 games during his first professional season, posting a 6-2 record and a 2.74 ERA this summer. Stauffer has cruised through the ranks and currently pitches for the Portland Beavers, the Padres' triple-A affiliate, after dominating at single-A Lake Elsinore and double-A Mobile.
The Futures All-Star game features prospects from every level of minor league baseball and is set up in a USA vs. The World format. Stauffer was the second pitcher used by the USA squad.
