UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Two first-half goals were enough for No. 8 Old Dominion to top the 12th-ranked Richmond field hockey squad, 2-0, Friday night in Norfolk, Va. The loss dropped Richmond to 6-2 on the season, while the Lady Monarchs improved to 4-3.
"We outshot them and out-cornered them tonight," head coach Ange Bradley said. "We just couldn't get the ball in the net. I thought this was the best we have ever played against Old Dominion in the last three years."
ODU's Caroline Nichols broke the scoreless tie on a goal with just over 10 minutes left in the first half. Nichols scored what proved to be the game-winner using a rebound off an initial corner for Old Dominion.
Janelle Engle added an insurance goal for the Lady Monarchs when she converted on a penalty stroke with 1:54 left in the first half.
The Spiders failed to convert after outshooting ODU 7-4 in the first half and 5-2 in the second half. Richmond was also awarded more penalty corners, including a 5-1 margin in the second half, but could not capitalize.
Richmond junior Michelle Swartz stopped three of Old Dominion's five shots on goal, but the Lady Monarchs' Mary Cate Gordon turned away all eight Spider shots on goal.
Junior Holly Cram led the Richmond attack with five shots, four on goal. Junior Colleen Wevodau posted two shots on goal, while five other Spiders recorded one attempt.
"I hope we can take what we learned about ourselves tonight into our next game," Bradley said. "We executed our gameplan very well tonight, we just didn't score the goals we needed."
Richmond returns to action Sunday at Crenshaw Field when it welcomes James Madison to town. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
