UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond field hockey team notched its fifth shutout of the season and fourth-straight win Sunday, 4-0, over the Temple Owls. The Spiders, who have now won their last 28 against A-10 opponents dating back to 2002, move to 9-5 overall and 4-0 in the A-10. The Owls slip to 8-9 on the season and 3-1 in the conference, after suffering their first A-10 loss in 2005.
Richmond, which controlled most of the game, garnered eight corners on the day and did not allow an Owl penalty corner. The Spiders also limited the Temple attack to just five shots and only three on goal. Senior Michelle Swartz turned away all three to preserve her fourth shutout of the season and 32nd of her career.
Sophomore Shannon Taylor got the Spiders on the board in the 18th minute off an attack from the right. A ball was inserted in the circle when senior Whitney Wells centered it to Taylor who was waiting for the goal.
Richmond was successful on one of its five first-half corners, when sophomore Erin Arthur knocked home her fourth goal of the season. A set play off the corner saw Arthur gather a pass from senior Lesley Russell, who was on the initial push out to begin the four-touch play, and send it past the keeper.
With a 2-0 lead at the half, Richmond came out and took just five shots in the second period, but made the most of them scoring twice. Russell garnered her second and third points of the game when she was able to flip a ball over the Owl keeper in a scrum in front of the goal, making the score 3-0 at the 59:37 mark.
With just 38 seconds left, senior Colleen Wevodau took a loose ball on the right and put it in the back of the cage for the final goal of the game.
Richmond, which has now won 23-straight A-10 regular season games, honored eight seniors, Michelle Swartz, Whitney Wells and Colleen Wevodau, prior to what was their last regular season home game at Crenshaw Field.
The Spiders will now play four-straight on the road to end the season, beginning with a trip to La Salle, Oct. 21 at 3:30 p.m.
