PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Richmond Spider Field Hockey squad moved its win streak to five games with a 2-1 overtime victory against La Salle in Philadelphia, Pa., Friday. The win, Richmond's 29th-straight over A-10 opponents, moved the Spiders to 10-5 overall and 5-0 in the conference. The win also helped the Spiders to their fifth-straight 10-win season and sixth in the last seven seasons. La Salle fell to 3-14 overall and 1-4 in the league.
Junior Jodi Murphy got the Spiders on the board in the 29th minute when she used a pass from sophomore Tara Kelly to score her fourth goal of the season and first in Atlantic 10 play. The Explorers limited Richmond to just three shots the first period and only one penalty corner. The Spiders, however, did not allow a shot and gave up only one penalty corner to La Salle.
In the second half the Spiders were able to secure six corners and seven total shots, but could not convert on any. La Salle found a way to tie the contest in the 61st minute when Amy Comstock put one in after an attempt at the save for senior Michelle Swartz resulted in a miss.
La Salle was unable to get another shot the rest of the contest and the Spiders could not get a goal, sending the contest into extra time. In the overtime period Richmond managed two shots and two corners as the second attempt was successful. Just over one minute into the extra time sophomore Shannon Taylor scored her league-leading 12th goal off an assist from senior Michelle La Force. The goal ended the game and gave Richmond its 24th-straight win in A-10 regular season play. For La Force it was her 29th career assist, only two behind Spider assistant Jill Murphy for the Richmond all-time career assists lead.
The Spiders now travel to West Chester, Pa., for a game against the Golden Rams at noon, Sunday, Oct. 22.
