Williamsburg, Va. - William and Mary defeated Richmond, 17-6, Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference collegiate women's lacrosse game at Busch Field.
With the victory, the Tribe snaps a two-game slide and improves to 1-2 on the young season. The Spiders drop to 0-3.
On a clear, but frigid afternoon, W&M jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening minute.
Richmond, however, rebounded with three consecutive tallies, including two by Kristen Habicht and the third coming off the stick of Allison Nuzzi at the 23:33 mark of the half, to put the Spiders ahead 3-2. The lead was short-lived though, as the Tribe scored just over a minute later.
The Tribe was back ahead just 29 seconds later, W&M fired a shot past Richmond keeper Allison Nuzzi and Ashley Friend. W&M took control and closed the half with three-straight scores to lead 9-5 at the break.
The Tribe defense yielded its first, and only goal, of the final 30 minutes, when Caroline McQuire scored with 7:29 re-maining. Tribe freshman keeper Amanda Roth was sharp between the pipes, registering 10 saves in her first collegiate start.
Richmond faces Virginia on Sunday, March 13 at 1:00 p.m. in Charlottesville.
