Women's Lacrosse Drops 16-8 Decision to #16 Towson

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - After jumping to a quick lead, the University of Richmond women's lacrosse team suffered a 16-8 loss to #16 Towson this afternoon at First Market Stadium. With their fourth loss to a nationally-ranked opponent, the Spiders drop to 2-5 on the season while the Tigers improve to 6-1.
Three players scored multiple goals for the Spiders with junior Caroline McGuire (Darien, Conn.), freshmen Claire Cunniff (Catonsville, Md.) and Jenna Hubbard (Severna Park, Md.) each tallying two scores. Senior Kristen Habicht (Baltimore, Md.) recorded two assists on the afternoon.
The Tigers were led by sophomore Shannon Witzel's six goals. Seven other players scored for Towson.
Richmond took an early 2-0 lead after scoring a pair of goals within the first four minutes but Towson answered back with seven straight scores, including two from the combination of Shannon Witzel and Becky Trumbo. Richmond ended its scoring drought at the 23:38 mark with a goal from Ashley Friend (Canandaigua, N.Y.) but Towson scored the last two goals of the half and held a 9-3 lead at the break.
In the second half, the teams exchanged goals throughout the first 17 minutes before Towson took a 13-5 lead off Witzel's final tally of the afternoon with 12 minutes left in the game. Both squads scored three more goals and Towson earned the 16-8 victory.
Junior Jackie Swansburg (Beverly, Mass.) recorded 10 saves in the net for Richmond and Mandy Corry made 14 saves for Towson.
The Tigers held a 29-26 advantage in shots and a 16-10 edge in draw controls.
The Spiders open Atlantic 10 conference play on Friday, April 1 when they host George Washington at 3:00 p.m.
