Women's Lacrosse Downed 11-6 by George Washington

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Despite a four goal performance from senior Kristen Habicht (Baltimore, Md.), the University of Richmond women's lacrosse team suffered an 11-6 loss to George Washington this afternoon in both team's conference opener at First Market Stadium. The Spiders drop to 2-6, 0-1 in the Atlantic 10 while George Washington improves to 6-2, 1-0 in the league.
Junior Caroline McGuire (Darien, Conn.) and sophomore Ashley Friend (Canandaigua, N.Y.) each added one score for Richmond. Sophomore Morghan Vahue (Victor, N.Y.) recorded two assists.
Seven players scored for the Colonials with sophomore Laura Hostetler leading the team with four goals. Senior Heidi Mayer registered five assists.
Richmond got on the scoreboard first as Vahue recorded her first assist of the afternoon when McGuire's shot went past the GW goalie just a minute and a half into the contest. The Colonials evened the score six minutes later off a free position attempt. Richmond took a 3-1 lead after Habicht took the ground ball from a missed Spider shot and scored from five-yards out. George Washington rattled off two goals in nine seconds and then scored four of the next five goals to build a 7-4 advantage at the break.
In the second half, George Washington scored the first two goals, tallying a pair with 20 minutes left in the game. Habicht then scored her second goal of the game from a free position shot before the teams exchanged goals and the final score was set at 11-6.
Junior Jackie Swansburg (Beverly, Mass.) made one save in the net for Richmond and freshman Caitlin Garman made four stops for George Washington.
George Washington took two extra shots (19-17) but Richmond held the advantage in ground balls (22-21) and caused turnovers (10-9).
The Spiders return to the field on Friday, April 8 at 3:00 p.m. when they host Duquesne.
