Women's Lacrosse Falls to Duquesne 11-9

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - University of Richmond junior Caroline McGuire (Darien, Conn.) scored five goals, including a pair in the final three minutes that cut the deficit to one, but the Duquesne University women's lacrosse team left First Market Stadium with an 11-9 win this afternoon. Richmond falls to 2-7, 0-2 in the Atlantic 10 Conference while the Dukes improve to 7-2 and stay undefeated in the league at 2-0.
McGuire led all scorers with five goals while recording her third hat trick of the season. Her final two tallies came in a 20-second span, setting the score at 10-9 with 2:49 remaining on the clock. Four other players scored for the Spiders.
The Dukes were led by senior Ginger Flocco's four goals and one assist.
Duquesne built a 3-0 lead in the first half before the Spiders' got on the scoreboard with a goal from senior Kristen Habicht (Baltimore, Md.) ten minutes into the contest. The Dukes responded with three unanswered scores before the Spiders ended the period with goals off free position shots from sophomore Ashley Friend (Canandaigua, N.Y.) and freshman Claire Cuniff (Catonsville, Md.) to set the score at 6-3.
In the second half, McGuire and Habicht (Baltimore, Md.) combined for the first score of the period but Duquesne rattled off two in under a minute to extend its lead to four.
With 12 minutes left in the game, Richmond cut the Dukes' advantage to just one with a trio of goals, one from junior Sara Allen (Rosemont, Pa.) and two from McGuire. The Dukes rebuilt their lead to three before McGuire's duo that again brought the Spiders' within one. Flocco scored for Duquesne with just over two minutes remaining on the clock and the Dukes pulled out the 11-9 victory.
Junior Jackie Swansburg (Beverly, Mass.) made eight saves in the net for Richmond while Sarah Pacini made six saves for Duquense.
The teams were even in both shots (25) and ground balls (24).
Richmond hosts St. Bonaventure on Sunday, April 10 at noon at First Market Stadium.
