UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - With an 8-6 win over St. Bonaventure, the University of Richmond women's lacrosse team earned its first conference win of the season this afternoon at First Market Stadium. The Spiders improve to 3-7, 1-2 in the Atlantic 10 while the Bonnies drop to 7-3 and 0-3 in the league.
Senior Kristen Habicht (Baltimore, Md.) led the Spiders with three goals, including Richmond's final tally with three minutes left in the game, for her fifth hat trick of the season. Junior Caroline McGuire (Darien, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal and four other players contributed scores for Richmond. Junior Alison Nuzzi (Baltimore, Md.) added one assist.
Sophomore Katie Hurley (Liverpool, N.Y.) scored four of the Bonnies' six goals and senior Kelly Chevez (East Rochester, N.Y.) accounted for the assist on five scores.
The Spiders held a 2-0 advantage less than ten minutes into the game as Habicht and sophomore Morghan Vahue (Victor, N.Y.) converted free position attempts. At the 13:36 mark, Nuzzi's score gave the Spiders' a 3-0 lead. The Bonnies got on the scoreboard three minutes later but Richmond's Sara Allen (Rosemont, Pa.) answered back with just over ten minutes left in the half. St. Bonaventure rattled off two scores in 11 seconds to get within one but the Spiders ended the period with a goal from sophomore Ashley Friend (Canandaigua, N.Y.) and held a 5-3 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Bonnies evened the score at 5-5 with two quick goals and after eight minutes of play without a score from either team, the Spiders went back ahead off Habicht's second score of the day. At the 46:44 point, McGuire tallied the game-winner, her first goal of the afternoon. St. Bonaventure got back within one with just under eight minutes left in the game, but Habicht's final score thwarted any attempts for a Bonnie comeback.
Richmond junior Jackie Swansburg (Beverly, Mass.) made 11 saves in the goal while the Bonnies' Eboni Preston stopped seven shots.
St. Bonaventure recorded one extra shot (24-23) and one extra ground ball (22-21) but the teams were even in both turnovers (16) and draw controls (8).
Richmond faces Temple on Friday, April 15 at 3:00 p.m. in Philadelphia.
