Lacrosse Upends #17 Temple, 8-6

PHILADELPHIA - Junior Caroline McGuire scored three times and classmate Allison Nuzzi added one goal and three assists as the Richmond women's lacrosse team handed 17th-ranked Temple just its third loss in three years of Atlantic 10 action with an 8-6 decision in Philadelphia this afternoon.
Richmond (4-7, 2-2 A-10) held on for its second consecutive victory after leading 4-2 at halftime and 7-3 with less than 10 minutes to play. Temple (6-5, 2-1 A-10) rallied with two goals in the final 2:17 but couldn't take the lead on goalie Jackie Swansburg who finished with 11 saves.
Ashley Friend opened the scoring just over five minutes into the game before the Owls knkotted the score 1-1. Goals from McGuire and Erin Kennedy 1:07 apart gave the visitors a 3-1 advantage. After a Temple score closed the gap to one, Claire Cunniff notched her only goal with 14 seconds remaining in the first half.
The Spiders scored three of the first four goals in the second half, one by Nuzzi, Samantha Tract and another by McGuire to extend Richmond's lead. McGuire's goal with 16:23 remaining proved to be the winning tally. She added her final score with 4:33 to play.
Richmond continues conference action against Saint Joseph's at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
