UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - After three years at the helm of Richmond men's basketball, Jerry Wainwright has resigned and accepted the head coaching position at DePaul University, a member of the Big East Conference in 2005-06.
During his tenure at Richmond, Wainwright posted a 50-41 (.549) overall record and a 28-20 (.583) mark in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Spiders advanced to the NIT in Wainwright's first season before earning an at-large berth to the 2004 NCAA Tournament.
After a 16-13 record in 2002-03, Richmond went 20-13 the next year, including a win at #10 Kansas, under the Berwyn, Ill. native. Last year's squad was 14-15.
The Spiders return their nucleus in 2005-06. All-Conference center Kevin Steenberge and fellow senior Jermaine Bucknor, who will play for the Canadian Senior Men's National Team next month, lead a veteran group against the most anticipated home schedule in program history.
A national search for a new head coach is underway.
Official Statement From Jim Miller
"I wish Jerry the best as he tackles a new challenge.
"Now, my focus is on attracting a coach to the University of Richmond who will provide leadership in our quest to compete for championships while providing a quality collegiate experience for our student-athletes.
"We have everything in place to be successful...exceptional student-athletes, a faculty and administration who care about them, strong alumni and community support, outstanding facilities, and a commitment to excellence from the top down.
"I will not be commenting again regarding this search until we are prepared to introduce our new men's basketball coach."
