RICHMOND, Va. — Jack McCaffery, a 6'9" forward from Iowa City, Iowa, will transfer to Richmond and play for the Spiders this upcoming season.
McCaffery spent the 2025-26 season at Butler, where he averaged 2.8 points and 1.6 rebounds in nine games before an illness ended his season prematurely. He is expected to receive a medical redshirt and have four seasons of eligibility remaining.
McCaffery arrived in Butler following a decorated prep career at Iowa City West High. He was named the 2024-25 Gatorade State Player of the Year after averaging 21.2 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game and was a First Team All-State selection by the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association. McCaffery was rated as the No. 89 player in the Class of 2025 by ESPN and was a consensus four-star recruit.
McCaffery comes from a prolific basketball family. His father Fran is the head men's basketball coach at Penn and has 30 seasons of experience as a head coach at the Division I level, also leading the programs at Iowa, Siena, UNC Greensboro, and Lehigh. He played collegiately at Wake Forest and Penn, while his mother Margaret, whose maiden name is Nowlin, was an All-American player at Notre Dame. He has three older siblings, Connor, Patrick and Marit. Connor appeared in 166 games at Iowa, second most in program history, and Patrick totaled more than 1,400 points and 500 rebounds in six seasons at Iowa and Butler.
McCaffery is the third member of Richmond's 2026 transfer class, joining Jamie Kaiser Jr. and Amon Dörries.
