TOWSON, Md. - Sophomore Shannon Taylor scored two goals as the Richmond field hockey squad ended Towson's five-game win streak with a 2-0 victory Sunday afternoon at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium in Towson, Md. With the win the Spiders improve to 4-2 overall and run their win streak to three-straight. Towson drops to 5-1 with the loss.
Taylor scored an unassisted goal midway through the first half to give the Spiders a 1-0 lead. Richmond maintained the lead until the final minutes of the game when Taylor scored her third goal of the season off a penalty corner with 3:22 remaining. A designed play off the corner helped the Spiders notch the second goal of the game. Senior Lesley Russell was on the push out to a stop by senior Michelle La Force. La Force then shoved it to Wevodau who sent it to Taylor for the shot.
Led by senior goalkeeper Michelle Swartz, the Richmond defense handed the Tigers their first shutout of the season. Towson had only three shots on goal as Swartz made two saves to pick up her second shutout of the season and 30th of her career. Swartz has now gone just over 177 minutes without surrendering a goal.
Richmond, which has now beaten Towson six-straight times in the all-time series, returns home next weekend for a 1 p.m. contest against William & Mary, Sept. 18. The Spiders will host the Tribe Sunday afternoon at Crenshaw Field before heading back on the road to face James Madison, Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. in Harrisonburg, Va.
