NEWARK, Del. - The Spider field hockey squad lost its first game at the Delaware Blue Hen Classic, Sept. 3, to the Ohio State Buckeyes, 3-1, in Newark, Del. Richmond, which faced the Buckeyes for the first time since 2001, drops to 1-2 on the season while OSU evens its mark at 1-1.
The Buckeyes took a lead in the 17th minute of the contest when Yesenia Luces tipped in a pass from Lucy Clayton on the left past senior keeper Michelle Swartz. Four minutes later the Spiders tied the game with one of five first-half shots. Sophomore Tara Kelly used a rebound in front of the cage to score her first goal of the season.
Ohio State was on the attack for much of the first half forcing Swartz to swat eight away on 12 total shots. The Buckeyes earned five corners in the first to just one for Richmond. Two more of those 12 shots got through Swartz, the first at the 25:24 mark was an unassisted attack by Lauren Kruse.
With just one minute left in the first period, Leticia Fragapane gave the Buckeyes a 3-1 lead on a breakaway goal.
The Spiders, trailing 3-1 at halftime, went on to outshoot the Buckeyes in the second half, 6-2, and earned four corners in the second. Even the 4-1 corner advantage in the second half did not help get anymore past Ohio State's Lindsay Williams in cage. Swartz did not face a shot in the second half, making all eight of her total saves in the first half.
Richmond will wrap up Blue Hen Classic action tomorrow when head coach Ange Bradley and her squad face host Delaware. Bradley is 0-1 against her alma mater at Richmond. The Spiders lost a 2-1 overtime decision when the two teams faced each other in 2002. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 4.
