NEWARK, Del. - Richmond's field hockey team used a come-from-behind effort Sunday, Sept. 4, to top Delaware, 3-2, in the final day of the Blue Hen Classic in Newark, Del. The Spiders, who trailed 2-0 at halftime, scored three unanswered goals in the second half to beat the host school and even their mark at 2-2. The Blue Hens of Delaware, head coach Ange Bradley's alma mater, fell to 3-2 on the season with the loss.
The Blue Hens, who outshot the Spiders in the first half, 8-6, took a lead in the 17th minute when Stephanie Swain used a rebound opportunity to get one past senior keeper Michelle Swartz. Late in the first half Delaware struck again on another rebound in front of the cage. This time Amanda Arrington cleaned up a miss to help the Blue Hens take a 2-0 advantage with just two minutes to play in the half.
The Spiders came out motivated and ready to attack in the second half. Richmond's senior Whitney Wells single-handedly evened the score at the 54:27 mark. Wells, who scored the Spiders' first goal from five feet out in the 44th minute, scored her third goal of the season and second of the game to knot it a 2-2.
With just over 10 minutes remaining, sophomore Shannon Taylor came up big in a penalty corner opportunity. Senior Allie Howard took the push out and sent one in to senior Michelle La Force for the stop. Taylor then powered it past Delaware's Megan Allen for the game-winner. The goal, Richmond's first of the season off a penalty corner, came off one of the Spiders six corner opportunities in the second half.
Leading the charge for Richmond was Taylor with eight total shots. Junior Jodi Murphy took three shots and recorded a defensive save early in the second half. Howard and junior Heather Wrublesky each accounted for two of Richmond's 18 shots.
Swartz, who is now 2-2 on the season, stopped five enroute to the 3-2 victory.
The Spiders return to Richmond for a game at crosstown rival VCU, Friday, Sept. 9. Game time against the Rams is set for 4 p.m. at Cary Street Field.
