PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Freshman Lindsay Conrad's goal just under 13 minutes into overtime capped a dramatic 2-1 win for the 17th-ranked Richmond field hockey squad over Temple Friday afternoon at Geasey Field in Philadelphia, Pa. With the victory, the Spiders improve to 12-4 overall and 5-0 in the Atlantic 10 and extend their unbeaten streak to seven-straight. The Owls fall to 12-5 overall and 3-2 in the Atlantic 10.
Alli Lokey's ninth goal of the season got Temple on the board in the 17th minute play. Following a failed penalty corner for the Owls seconds before, Ashley Bird and Leanne Vogelsong set up the game's first tally. Richmond managed just two shots in the first half as Temple carried their one-goal lead into intermission.
Down a goal in the second frame, the Spider offense ignited in peppering Temple's keeper Erin Hanshue for nine second half shots. Sophomore Becca Weaver's four saves in regulation kept the Spiders within striking distance before sophomore Alex Malatesta flipped in the match's tying goal with less than 10 seconds remaining in regulation. Richmond's seventh penalty corner of the half resulted in Malatesta's fifth goal this season and the game's equalizer.
The Spiders' relentless offensive attack carried itself into the extra session coming away with seven shots and five corners. Richmond twice missed scoring chances as junior Ines Reimundes fired a shot off the post and junior Shannon Taylor sent Hanshue sprawling for a brilliant save. Richmond's 13th penalty corner of the afternoon produced a loose ball which senior Jodi Murphy gathered and found Conrad for the game's clincher.
Weaver ended the game with four saves on the day, as the Spiders outshot the Owls 18-7 over 83 minutes of play.
The Spiders will remain in Philadelphia, Pa., Sunday, Oct. 22, to face St. Joseph's at 11 a.m. Be sure to logon to Richmond's official athletics website -- RichmondSpiders.com for all the latest information on Spider field hockey.
