PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Junior Shannon Taylor notched her second four-goal game of the season to help lead the 17th-ranked Spider field hockey squad past St. Joseph's, 6-1, Sunday in Philadelphia, Pa. Richmond improves to 13-4 overall and 6-0 in the Atlantic while St. Joe's drops to 9-9 on the season and 3-3 in the league.
Richmond started off the scoring 3:35 minutes in, when junior Shannon Taylor notched both, the first coming off a rebound from SJU keeper Rebecca Cunfer's stick, and the second a blast from in front of the goal to the top of the cage.
Taylor was not satisfied with her two goals in the first half and went on to record the pure-hat trick with her third consecutive goal of the game in the 42nd minute. Freshman Jess Weidner and Kelly were in on the assists as the Spiders' scored off penalty corner.
The Spiders increased their lead to five in the 60th minute of play when freshman Lindsey Conrad scored on an assist from freshman Lena Voelmle.
Richmond notched its sixth goal at 64:19 mark when Taylor blasted in another shot from the top of the arch for her 54th career tally. Taylor needs just two more goals this season to tie Dawn Reyerson's career mark of 56 goals which ranks second all-time at Richmond. The Midlothian, Va., native's four goals on the day also place her in sole possession of second place on the Spiders' single-season goals list with 26.
With less than two minutes remaining, Lauren Luft put the Hawks on the board as Anne Schreuders tipped the ball to Luft who took a spin shot from the ride side to knock it past Richmond's sophomore Becca Weaver into the left corner of the cage.
Richmond outshot St. Joseph's, 27-8, and edged the Hawks in penalty corners, 11-5, for the game. Weaver ended the game with three total saves.
The Spiders will closeout their regular season next Sunday when they host Saint Louis, Oct. 29, at noon. Prior the game against the Billikens, Richmond will honor its two senior co-captains Heather Wrublesky.
