UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond junior Shannon Taylor was named a Second Team All-South Region selection Tuesday, as five regional squads were announced by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. Taylor, The Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year, is the sixth Spider all-time to earn Second Team regional honors from the NFHCA.
"I am proud Shannon represented the 2006 Spider team with a Regional All-American honor," Spider head coach Ange Bradley said. "To earn a Second Team Regional All-American honor in the powerhouse south region is a huge honor."
The Midlothian, Va., native ended the 2006 season with a team-best 30 goals and nine assists for a combined total of 69 points. Her single-season goal total was one better than Holly Cram's school record of 29 set in 2004, while Taylor's point total was three better than Cram's school record of 67 set in 2004.
Taylor, who finished the season ranked fourth nationally in both goals per game (1.36) and points per game (3.14), also set the Richmond career points mark this past season in only her third season. The midfielder has scored a combine 139 points in her three years at Richmond (58 goals, 23 assists), topping Heather Rice's mark of 133 set from 1998-2001. Taylor is just four goals shy of breaking Rice's career goals mark of 61.
"This honor means she is among the best players in the country, which hopefully will play out when the All-American teams are announced," Bradley said. "She and the 2006 Spiders are deserving of this honor."
The 17th-ranked Spiders ended their season this past weekend by falling to second-ranked Maryland in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Championships, 4-0. Be sure to logon to Richmond's official athletics website -- RichmondSpiders.com for all the latest information on Spider field hockey.
