UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The youth of the Richmond men's basketball team showed Wednesday night when the Spiders lost to the Radford Highlanders 67-50 in the Robins Center.
The loss dropped the Spiders to 3-2 on the season after a 3-0 start.
Freshman center Dan Geriot scored 21 points on 9-for-16 shooting to pace Richmond in scoring. Geriot also grabbed five rebounds in the game.
A 3-pointer from Spider freshman guard Brian Morris with 2:54 left in the second half narrowed Radford's lead to 52-46, but the Highlanders pulled away on a 13-0 run to secure the victory.
"Radford not only played well, but really took the game to us," said Spider head coach Chris Mooney. "They were much more aggressive right from the start."
Each of Richmond's five starters collected a steal and three of those takeaways came in the second half as the Spider defensive intensity picked up.
Richmond's bench contributed 16 points, including five from sophomore forward Jarhon Giddings and five from freshman guard David Gonzalvez.
Radford's offense clicked early on and the hot-handed attack was sustained through most of the game. The Highlanders shot 50 percent from the floor and went 5-for-13 from beyond the arc. Senior forward Chris Oliver led Radford with a double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds.
Richmond's Morris finished with seven points, two assists and one steal. The Spiders as a team shot 61.5 percent from the floor in the second half, an impressive mark that was just below the 62.5 clip from the Highlanders during that time.
For Geriot, the contest against Radford marked the fourth time in five games that he has scored in double figures. In each of Richmond's five games, four of the five players in the starting lineup have been freshmen.
Radford handed the Spiders their first home loss through four games in the Robins Center. Richmond had won five-straight in the building and will have four of the next six games at home.
The Spiders look to pick up their fourth win of the season on Saturday when they challenge a tough Marist team (5-2) which is led by NBA prospect Jared Jordan, who led the nation in assists last season. Tip-off between Richmond and Marist on Saturday is set for 7 p.m.
