UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond junior Shannon Taylor was one of six Spiders honored as part of the 2006 VaSID All-State Field Hockey first and second team, as voted on by sports information directors across the commonwealth of Virginia. Taylor was the lone Richmond student-athlete on the first team, as five others earned spots on the second team.
Taylor, the reigning Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year, ended the 2006 season with a team-best 30 goals and nine assists for a combined total of 69 points. Her single-season goal total was one better than Holly Cram's school record of 29 set in 2004, while Taylor's point total was three better than Cram's school record of 67 set in 2004. Taylor, who finished the season ranked fourth nationally in both goals per game (1.36) and points per game (3.14), also set the Richmond career points mark this past year in only her third season. The midfielder has scored a combined 139 points in her three years at Richmond (58 goals, 23 assists), topping Heather Rice's mark of 133 set from 1998-2001. Taylor is just four goals shy of breaking Rice's career goals mark of 61.
Seniors Heather Wrublesky and Jodi Murphy, juniors Erin Arthur and Ines Reimundes and freshman Lindsey Conrad were all selected the 2006 All-State second team by VaSID.
Wrublesky finished her final season at Richmond with a career-year in points, goals and assists, and joined Murphy at the NFHCA National Senior All-Star game, Nov. 18. The Langhorne, Pa., native scored 12 goals in 2006, four more than all of last season, and one more than her career total coming into the 2006 season. Wrublesky, a co-captain and Second Team All-Atlantic 10 selection, also notched five assists in 2006, three more than her career total prior to this past season.
Murphy was part of the Spiders' defense which limited foes to just eight shots per game. The First Team All-Atlantic 10 selection played in 21 games and led the Richmond defense which allowed just 0.56 goals-per-game in A-10 play. She also took part in the NFHCA National Senior All-Star game, Nov. 18, and was an All-Atlantic 10 Tournament selection in 2006.
Arthur was honored as a defender on the All-State second team after helping the Spiders to an overall goals-against average of 1.62. The junior logged a game-winner over Princeton early on in the season, and went on to pass out three assists in 2006.
Reimundes, a Second Team All-Atlantic 10 selection, also played a large role in Richmond's defense which limited opponents to a goals-per-game average of 1.62. The Argentina native joined the squad just prior to the season-opener and started all 18 game for the Spiders. Offensively, Reimundes contributed two goals and two assists while helping the Richmond defense limit A-10 opponents to just 6.3 shots-per-game.
Conrad, a First Team All-Atlantic 10 selection, enjoyed an outstanding rookie season for the Spiders ranking second in the conference in goals with 19 and points with 44. She was named the A-10 Rookie of the Week five times in the last five weeks of the season and posted six multi-goal games in her first collegiate stint.
The 17th-ranked Spiders ended their season by falling to the eventual National Champion Maryland Terrapins in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Championships, 4-0. Be sure to logon to Richmond's official athletics website -- RichmondSpiders.com for all the latest information on Spider field hockey.
