UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Senior Caroline McGuire scored four goals as she led the No. 9 University of Richmond women's lacrosse team to its fifth consecutive victory of the season on Wed. afternoon at First Market Stadium. The Spiders (6-2) used a three-goal run in the last fifteen minutes of play to come back and top American University (3-5), 10-8. While McGuire notched in four goals in the Spiders' victory, sisters Mandy and Ashley Friend each had two goals, and Sara Allen and Jenna Hubbard had one apiece.
M. Friend jumped the Spiders off to a 1-0 lead in the first 13 seconds of play, which McGuire then followed with her first goal of the afternoon at the 28:57 mark to give the Spiders a 2-0 advantage. American's Moriah Linnell assisted Leslie Fischer in her only game of the contest before Richmond's A. Friend would put in her first of two goals for the afternoon as the Spiders took a 3-1 advantage.
American's Gina Ibello and Caithlin Gorman put in the next two goals to bring the game to a 3-3 tie at the 17:08 mark, and the score would then go back-and-forth between the two teams until the last four seconds of the half where a goal by Caroline McGuire would put the Spiders at a one-goal advantage (6-5) going into halftime.
McGuire opened the second half with her fourth and final goal of the contest, assisted by Mandy Friend, before American would go on a three goal run that would put them ahead of the Spiders 8-7. However, the Spiders refused to let down and switched the momentum to take three consecutive goals, a two-goal lead, and their fifth-straight victory over American.
Jackie Swansburg ended Wednesday's game with 11 saves in goal for the Spiders, while Kathleen Finnegan finished the contest with eight saves.
The Spiders will now continue their three-game home stretch on Sunday with Towson at 2:00 p.m. Live coverage will be available at www.RichmondSpiders.com.
