UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Junior Shannon Taylor notched the 10th game-winner of her career, helping the 19th-ranked Spider field hockey squad top Towson, 2-1, Sunday at Crenshaw Field. Taylor and Spiders move to 1-0 to start the 2006 season, while Towson falls to 0-1 to begin its season. The Spiders continue their two-game homestand next Saturday, Sept. 2, when they host Princeton at 1 p.m.
Taylor led the way in Richmond's win with a total of nine shots -- five on goal. She put the Spiders on the board in the ninth minute with an unassisted goal. Taylor took advantage of loose ball in the middle of the circle to blast Richmond's first goal of the season.
Towson, which fired nine shots on the day, could not find a way to equalize the contest before the half. The Spiders outshot the Tigers, 10-5, in the first 35 minutes of play, but did not garner a single penalty corner opportunity while Towson had five.
Just over five minutes into the second half the Tigers pulled even with Richmond. Laura Schnell fired a ball in from the top right to Maureen Meara, who was waiting on the back post for the deflected goal, marking Towson's only shot on goal in the game.
Taylor and Richmond wasted no time to retake the lead for good. Richmond garnered one of its four penalty corners in the 44th minute of play which led to the goal. Taylor took the ball at the top of the circle, after the set-piece failed, and fired an untouched ball to the right corner. The goal marked her second on the day and the 30th of her career.
Sophomore Becca Weaver played all 70 minutes in the cage to earn her first win of the season and second win of her career. Freshman Lindsey Conrad fired four shots in her collegiate debut. Sophomore Alex Malatesta, junior Erin Arthur and freshman Sydney Leone each chipped in two shots, while senior Jodi Murphy notched one attempt.
The Spiders return to Crenshaw Field Saturday, Sept. 2, when they host Princeton at 1 p.m. Be sure to logon to Richmond's official athletics website -- RichmondSpiders.com for all the latest information on Spider field hockey.
