UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond field hockey squad turned in its first shutout of the season, and saw three players score multiple goals, as it downed VCU, 7-0, Friday afternoon at Crenshaw Field. The Spiders, 4-3 on the season, will have a day off before traveling to Washington, D.C., to face the 11th-ranked American Eagles, Sunday, Sept. 24. The loss drops the Rams to 1-7 in 2006.
Richmond dominated the contest both offensively and defensively, limiting the Rams to just two shots, both of which were turned away by sophomore goalkeeper Becca Weaver. Weaver, along with freshman Jacki Raithel, combined for the Spiders' first shutout since winning at Saint Louis, 3-0, Oct. 30, 2005.
Senior Heather Wrublesky pushed the Spiders in front just 3:30 into the contest. The Langhorne, Pa., native used an assist from sophomore Alex Malatesta to record Richmond's third goal off penalty corner this season. Freshman Megan Thompson tacked on another in the 17th minute, while Wrublesky notched her second of the day in the 22nd minute.
The Spiders outshot the Rams 9-1 in the first half, while both teams garnered three penalty corner opportunities.
Richmond turned up the offensive pressure in the second half scoring a total of four in the final 35 minutes. Thompson recorded her second goal of the game in the 46th minute of play. Her second tally helped mark the first multi-goal game of her career. Junior Shannon Taylor got into the scoring act with back-to-back goals in the 57th and 58th minutes. The Midlothian, Va., native had already garnered two assists on the day, and finished the game with a total of six points.
Freshman Anne Edwards rounded out the scoring for the Spiders, who outshot the Rams, 18-1, in the second half, with a goal in the 64th minute.
The Spiders' seven goals mark the most scored in a single game since they ousted Sacred Heart in the 2005 NCAA Play-In game, 7-2, Nov. 8, 2005.
Richmond will have tomorrow off before making a trip north to face No. 11 American, Sunday, Sept. 24. Game time in Washington, D.C., is set for 1 p.m. Be sure to logon to Richmond's official athletics website -- RichmondSpiders.com for all the latest information on Spider field hockey.
