UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Junior Shannon Taylor posted a pure hat trick with three-straight goals Saturday as the No. 19 ranked Richmond field hockey team blanked Radford 6-0 at Crenshaw Field.
Taylor, who now has 12 goals on the season, also had an assist in the game. Sophomore Alex Malatesta scored a goal and set up two others as the Spiders improved to 6-4 on the season.
Richmond will play its final non-conference game on Sunday, when it hosts Davidson at 12:30 p.m.
The Spiders out-shot Radford 27-5 for the game, including 17-3 in the first half. Richmond took a 1-0 lead 7:32 into the game on a goal by Alex Malatesta off an assist from Taylor.
Taylor then scored three-straight goals to give Richmond a 4-0 lead at the half. Taylor blasted a shot that was saved, but the rebound came right back to her, and she let loose another rocket that found the back of the net for a 2-0 lead 10 minutes into the game.
Twelve minutes later Taylor scored on a penalty corner off an assist from Jess Weidner for a 3-0 lead. Taylor's third goal of the game came off the rebound of a shot, where she was able to pop the ball up over the diving goalkeeper with five minutes remaining in the first half.
The Spiders' 4-0 lead would stay the same until eight minutes remained in the game. Malatesta took a shot that was deflected by Jess Weidner into the cage for a 5-0 lead.
Malatesta also set up the Spiders' sixth goal when she took a shot from the left wing that the keeper saved, but the ball deflected to senior Heather Wrublesky and she put it in for her fourth goal of the season.
