BRONX, N.Y. - Freshman Danielle Bell put in a career-high 17 points after hitting a career-high five treys to lead the Richmond women's basketball team to a 78-68 win over Fordham on Sunday afternoon in Rose Hill Gym, taking its third-straight road win and its fifth-straight over the Rams.
Freshman Katie Holzer led all Spiders with 18 points, in addition to grabbing seven rebounds. Bell followed with her second-straight double-digit performance and fifth of the season off of 5-of-7 shooting from behind the arch and a perfect 2-2 effort from the free throw line. Sarah Williams finished with 11 points, rounding out the Spiders in double-figures. Christina Campion dominated the boards for the Spiders, pulling eight rebounds.
"I thought for 30 minutes we played some of the best basketball we've played all season," stated Richmond head coach Michael Shafer. "In the last 10 minutes, I felt like we relaxed to the point where we were not able to turn the energy back on and we let Fordham back into the game. We keep getting better as a basketball team, but we need to develop a killer instinct and put people away. It's a good win; it's always good to win on the road and I'm happy for our team to hit above the .500 mark in the conference."
The Spiders jumped out to a 7-0 lead at the start of the game with over four minutes passing before the Rams would put a score on the board. Hot again from behind the arch, four of the next five Spider baskets were 3-pointers, including a pair from Williams and one apiece from Bell and Powell.
Richmond continued to dominate the first half and ran away with a 27-point lead just before the break, ending with two Spiders in double-figures.
Williams finished with 11 first-half points off of three treys and Holzer chipped in 10 points and six rebounds. While the Spiders had nine different players contribute points and four different players chip in several baskets in their balanced attack, six different Rams contributed points for Fordham, with only one player, Lisa Carrol, able to put in more than one basket in the first half.
For the second-straight game, the Spiders concluded the half with six threes on the board, in addition to holding a 21-8 advantage over the Rams on the boards.
Bell took over the 3-point reigns in the second half, sinking a pair, her second and third of the game, in just over a minute's span. At the 14:03 mark, following a Holzer basket, the Spiders went six minutes with just one basket while the Rams put in 14 points to close the game to a 13-point difference. Fordham then concluded its 20-5 run, facing an 11-point deficit.
The remaining five minutes went back and forth, but the Rams saw their hopes shattered as they could not come closer than an eight-point reach of the Spiders. Two more threes by Bell, her fourth and fifth of the afternoon, as well as free throws by Holzer, Bell, Campion and Powell kept the Spiders into the game. Powell alone sunk seven of eight in the last 1:05 of play to help secure the victory, handing the Rams their 13th-straight loss.
Fordham's Carrol led all scorers with 24 points, while Beth Trout and Annie Zopf followed with 13 and 10 points, respectively, as the Rams (2-19, 0-7 in A-10) remained winless in the conference.
The Spiders (10-12, 4-3 in A-10) now return home for a CSTV nationally-televised contest with No. 11/13 George Washington. Tip off with the Colonials is scheduled for Saturday at noon in the Robins Center. Live coverage for all of the Spiders' contests are available at RichmondSpiders.com.
