PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Richmond women's swimming suffered a pair of narrow defeats Saturday, falling to Connecticut and Villanova in a meet hosted by the Wildcats in Philadelphia. Katie Sieben and Lauren Beaudreau each won two individual events to lead the Spiders.
Beaudreau raced to the wall first in the 200 breast for the second-straight meet, winning the event in a time of 2:18.93. She also took the 200 IM in 2:05.27. The junior was second in the 200 free (1:53.26) and also swam on Richmond's second-place 400 free relay.
Sieben took the 50 free and the 100 fly for the second meet in a row, swimming the free in 24.05 and the fly in 56.14. The sophomore was second in the 100 free (52.36) and was part of the Spiders' second-place 400 medley relay.
"I thought we were motivated to challenge two very good teams from the Big East," said head coach Matt Barany. "But in close races, we offered them the wall instead of being aggressive and finishing first. We lost a lot of close races today."
Beth Ann Platt, who won the 200 back in a time of 2:05.47, was a half-second shy of winning the 100 back. Sieben was just three-tenths shy of winning the 100 free. The 400 medley relay was edged at the wall by less than three-tenths.
Jessica Witt won the 500 free in 5:00.97 and was second in the 1,000 free (10:19.48) and second in the 200 fly (2:06.02).
Platt, Cara Smaniotto, Sieben and Hannah Marlow teamed to swim the 400 medley relay in 3:56.80. Beaudreau, Kylie Francis, Witt and Natalie Lewis swam the 400 medley relay in 3:37.24.
The Spiders are back in action Nov. 15-17 at the Terrapin Invitational in College Park, Md.
