COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sophomore Alex Helland broke a school record in the 200 back, while sophomore Katie Sieben and senior Lauren Beaudreau each achieved NCAA B-cut times as the Richmond women's swimming team wrapped up action at the Terrapin Cup Saturday night.
The Spiders took fourth in the nine-team event, totaling 514.5 points.
"This entire weekend was an incredible team effort," said head coach Matt Barany. "I'm very proud of how quickly our girls our coming together so early in the season. This is one of the best November meets I've seen our team in my time here at Richmond."
Helland won the 200 back, sailing to the wall first in a school record time of 2:01.75. Senior Jessica Witt was second (2:02.74) behind Helland and freshman Elizabeth Hailand was eighth (2:08.04).
With another NCAA B-cut time, Sieben finished off her career breakout meet with a second-place finish in the 100 free. The sophomore raced to the wall in 50.17 and was nearly a full second ahead of the third-place finisher.
"What more can you say about the meet Katie had," said Barany. "An A-cut yesterday, another B-cut today. But she wasn't the only highlight. Alex (Helland) broke a few school records and Lauren (Beaudreau) and Jess (Witt) had some great swims."
Beaudreau took the 200 breast, marking yet another NCAA B-cut for the Spiders. The senior's time of 2:15.35 was nearly five seconds faster than her morning preliminary time.
Witt also took second in the 200 fly in a time of 2:04.06 - almost two seconds faster than her career personal-best. Freshman Nicole LePere was 17th in the event (2:08.70).
The Spiders are now off until January 12, 2008 when they make a return trip to College Park for a dual meet with Maryland.
