UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - On the strength of a career-high seven three-pointers, sophomore David Gonzalvez poured in 21 points to lead Richmond's 58-55 comeback win over William & Mary Tuesday night at the Robins Center. The Spiders posted their first home win, have won two of their last three and are back to .500 on the season.
Gonzalvez drained three treys in succession as the Spiders (4-4) rallied from an eight-point deficit midway through the second half.
The sophomore from Marietta, Ga. hit a career-high seven shots in 10 attempts from downtown for 21 points, surpassing his previous career-best of four threes. He also tied his career-high with four steals
Kevin Anderson's three trimmed the Tribe's lead to 49-44 at the 6:54 mark and that triggered the decisive 12-1 Richmond run over the next 2:10.
Less a minute later, Gonzalvez connected from long-range to pull the Spiders within three and then drained two more back-to-back, giving Richmond the lead for good (53-50) at the 4:45 mark.
The Spiders were a sizzling 14-of-29 (48.1 percent) from three-point range, their most proficient night from behind the arc since hitting 55.7 percent (15-of-27) versus Rhode Island in last season's home finale.
Freshman Justin Harper, who finished with a career-high 13 points on five-of-10 shooting from the field, made good on half of his six threes. He also collected two of Richmond's eight blocked shots, had a steal and an assist.
Thanks to back-to-back threes from Dan Geriot and Gonzalvez, the Spiders sprinted out to a quick 6-0 lead. Another Gonzalvez trey at the 11:05 mark gave Richmond its largest least of the game (14-7) and the sophomore was good again from downtown, matching that seven-point edge at 29-22 with 40 seconds to play in the half.
Richmond owned a 31-26 lead at halftime, but saw William & Mary (1-4) explode out of the locker room on an 18-5 run. Chris Darnell hit two threes in the spurt and the Tribe got another from Nathan Mann to open a 44-36 advantage with 10:27 left, before Gonzalvez took over.
Mann finished with 13 to lead W&M, which fell two games back of Richmond in the all-time series (98-96). Darnell and Alex Smith each had 10.
Richmond returns to action in the West End next Wednesday to entertain South Florida. Tip off at the Robins Center versus the Big East foe is set for 7 p.m. ET.
