UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Sophomore right-hander Ian Marshall pitched a complete-game four-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts as the Richmond baseball team defeated Delaware 2-0 Saturday in the second game of a doubleheader to sweep a three-game weekend series.
Marshall went the full seven innings of the second game of the rescheduled doubleheader. He allowed four hits, no runs, struck out a career-high 10 and walked just one. The seven inning appearance tied for the longest outing of his career.
"We got outstanding pitching from everybody today, especially Ian (Marshall) in that seven inning job there," Richmond head coach Ron Atkins said.
With Richmond holding a 2-0 lead in the top of the seventh, Marshall walked the lead-off batter and then gave up a single to put the tying run on base. The sophomore came back to strike out the next two batters looking and got a groundball to third to end the game.
"He walked that one guy, they got the base hit and the kid could've folded, but he didn't," Atkins said. "He came back, struck the next two guys out, just a tremendous job."
The Spiders got on the scoreboard in the third inning when Marshall's brother, Benji Marshall, was hit by a pitch and Benji Marshall to third. Alex Wotring followed with a sacrifice fly to right that gave the Spiders a 1-0 lead.
Ian Marshall would make that one run enough for the win, but the Spiders added an insurance run in the fourth inning. Cameron Brown led off with a single and Matt McKenna bunted him over to second. Freshman Evan Stehle followed with his first career hit, a double to left-center field, to drive in Brown for Stehle's first career RBI.
"Good teams win by pitching and defense and that's what we did today," Atkins said. "Offensively we did just enough to get the job done."
Richmond's game Sunday was played as the second game of a doubleheader, so the Spiders will play again next Friday at Wichita State at 3 p.m., the first game of a three-game series.
