UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond sophomore women's tennis player Pamela Duran (Guayaquil, Ecuador) has soared to a #68 national ranking, according to the FILA College Tennis Rankings.
Duran was ranked as high as #74 as a freshman and #90 in Feb. 2007.
"Pam is a very smart and determined player," stated Richmond head coach Mark Wesselink. "She is one of the most mentally tough players we have had. The whole team is thrilled for her."
Duran has earned an 11-7 mark on the year, including a 7-4 record in singles play in spring action. In dual matches, she owns a split 4-4 mark at the no. 1 spot after taking down the No. 5 player in the country, Megan Moulton-Levy of William and Mary in early spring earning her A-10 Player of the Week honors.
Her recent win over the #46 player in the country (Kellie Schmitt from Marshall), her second over a top player, helped boost her standing in the national rankings.
Duran is also enjoying a successful doubles season with sophomore Ashlee Vosters, recording a 10-4 mark this year, including a 9-2 spring record at the no. 2 spot. The duo is currently on an eight-match win streak.
Duran is coming off a stellar rookie season, in which she recorded a team-best doubles record of 15-4, competing at No. 2 and 3. The 2006 A-10 Most Outstanding Rookie and All-Conference Honoree also compiled a singles mark of 7-8, playing at the No. 1 and 2 spots.
