TOWSON, Md. - Despite a four-goal comeback rally in the final 25 minutes of the second half, the No. 14 Richmond women's lacrosse team was unable to convert a goal in the overtime periods and Towson University edged by with a 10-9 double-overtime win on Sunday afternoon at Johnny Unitas Stadium.
Sophomore transfer Allison Furstenburg led the Spiders' efforts with a game-high four goals, her fourth hat trick of the season, while Mandy Friend chipped in two, including the game-tying goal, and junior Jenna Hubbard and seniors Morghan Vahue and Ashley Friend added one goal apiece in the loss.
Just over a minute into play, the Tigers jumped to a 1-0 lead off an unassisted goal from leading scorer Hillary Fratzke; however, the Spiders claimed four of the next five goals to take a 6-4 lead with 19:53 remaining.
Spider forward Furstenburg responded at the 26:06 mark with her first of four tallies on the afternoon to knot the game 1-1, and just over two minutes later, Vahue picked up a ground ball as she assisted teammate Hubbard on a goal, to give the Spiders a 2-1 advantage.
Fratzke won the ensuing draw for the Tigers, creating their second goal as she assisted Shannnon Witzel on her first of three goal, knotting the game 2-2 just 12 seconds later. The Spiders rattled in the next two goals to take a 4-2 lead over the Tigers with just under 20 minutes remaining in the first half; however, Towson responded with a 4-0 run in less than a four minute span to take a 6-4 lead.
Mandy Friend converted a free position attempt for the Spiders' third goal just before assisting Furstenburg on her second goal of the contest and before the Tigers' run ignited. Witzel scored a pair of goals in the run, while Fratzke and Britt Woodfield rounded out scoring action.
Richmond's Furstenburg tallied her third goal at the 4:17 mark in the first half to close the game to a 6-5 Spider deficit; however, Woodfield and Fratzke each chipped in one more goal before the close of the half to push the Tigers to a three-goal lead (8-5).
Towson opened the second half with a goal in the first five minutes from Ali Alati to take a four goal (9-5) advantage over the Spiders; however, Richmond pulled together a four-goal run in the remaining minutes of the contest as it battled for its third-straight win.
Furstenburg concluded her scoring for the afternoon as she chipped in her fourth goal of the contest, sparking the Spiders' 4-0 run at the 25:07 mark. Senior Ashley Friend almost five minutes later. After close to 12 minutes of scoreless action, Vahue broke the stalemate as she netted a goal to bring the game to a one goal differential with 8:48 left in play.
Just over two minutes later, Mandy Friend found the back of the net for the second time that afternoon, to send the contest into overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime period, Maggie McNamara chipped in her first goal of the contest and the game-winner 48 seconds into the second overtime period as the Tigers (3-3) edged by the Spiders, avenging last year's one-goal loss to Richmond and earning their first win over a nationally-ranked opponent this season.
Spider keeper Jackie Swansburg made seven saves between the pipes, while Mandy Corry notched eight saves on the other end for the Tigers.
The Spiders (5-4) will return to action and look to get back on the winning track this Thursday as they host Old Dominion at 3:00 p.m. at First Market Stadium.
