PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Seniors Morghan Vahue and Ashley Friend each notched an overtime goal to give the Richmond women's lacrosse team (8-4, 2-0 in A-10) a 9-7 edge over Saint Joseph's on Friday afternoon at Finnesey Field. Sophomore Mandy Friend also added a hat trick as the Spiders captured their third-straight win on the season and the seventh-straight win over the Hawks.
While Mandy notched her second-straight hat trick against the Hawks and her seventh on the season, as well as an assist, Vahue and Ashley each finished the battle with a pair of goals and an assist. Claire Cunniff and Erin Kennedy also chipped in one apiece as the Spiders earned their fifth win in the last six games.
Richmond came out with intensity, taking a 4-2 lead by halftime. Mandy Friend opened the game with two quick goals in just over five minutes of play, the first unassisted, the second off a helper from Vahue. Lindsey McCool put the Hawks on the board at the 16:34 mark to cut the Spider lead in half (2-1) before Richmond rattled off two consecutive goals to pull out to a 4-1 lead with just over four minutes remaining in the first half.
Mandy Friend assisted Cunniff on the Spiders' third goal before netting her third goal of the afternoon off a helper from sister Ashley. Saint Joseph's Jessica Westlake responded with her first of three goals in the final minute before the intermission to close the game to a two-goal differential at halftime.
Richmond's Ashley Friend recorded her first tally of the contest in the opening two minutes of the second half for a 5-2 Spider advantage; however, the Hawks followed with a 4-0 run to take their first lead of the contest (6-5). Westlake rounded out her hat trick with a pair of goals and Jenna Martino chipped a goal to knot the contest at 5-5, while Christina Colangelo notched the goal to put the Hawks ahead 6-5.
Richmond tied up the game 6-6 off a free position goal from Kennedy; however, less than a minute later, the Hawks stole the lead again off a Martino goal at 11:10. Finally, after over eight minutes of scoreless action, Richmond's Vahue found the back of the net for the game-tying goal, sending the back and forth battle into overtime.
The Spiders dominated the overtime as Vahue continued her scoring ways, tallying the go-ahead goal in the first 11 seconds. Ashley Friend followed with an unassisted goal in the final :40 to cement the two-goal (9-7) victory over the Hawks (4-4, 0-1 in the A-10).
Richmond finished with an advantage in draw controls (12-8), as well as shots (30-11).
The Spiders will continue their Philly road trip on Sunday with Temple (2-6) at 1:00 p.m. at Geasy Field as they look to capture their fifth-straight win over the Owls. Richmond and Temple last met in the A-10 Championship contest last season as the Spiders took a 13-11 victory to claim the A-10 title for the second-straight year.
