PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Despite a four goal performance by both Mandy Friend and Allison Furstenburg, the Richmond women's lacrosse team was edged by Temple 9-8 on Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia, Pa., its first loss in four games.
Although the Spiders jumped out to a 7-2 lead three minutes into the second half, the Owls poured in seven of the last eight goals for the comeback victory and the first win over the Spiders in the last five meetings.
While Mandy notched her second-straight hat trick and eighth on the season, Furstenburg's performance marked her seventh hat trick of the season.
Temple senior Allison Frengs scored three goals to lead the Owl's come-from-behind win, netting two goals in a five-goal Temple run to tie the game at seven and eventually give Temple (4-6 overall, 2-0 in the A-10) its first win over the Spiders since the 2004 season.
The Owl's Whitney Richards scored two goals, including the game-winner, and added an assist in the winning effort, while Casey Cech also netted two goals for Temple.
The very physical game featured six yellow and red cards, including five by the Spiders, allowing the Owls to play a woman-up for six minutes in the second half and mount their successful comeback.
Richmond took an early 2-0 lead off a Friend and Furstenburg goal but the Owls battled back to tie the score at two with just under 16 minutes to play. That would be as close as Temple could get; however, as the Spiders rattled off five straight goals, including three to end the half with a 5-2 result.
Friend and Furstenburg combined to extend the Spider lead to five (7-2) early in the second half but Temple would not remain quiet for much longer. Richards' low sidearm free position goal at 26:32 gave TU its first goal in 20 minutes and began a five goal run that tied the score at seven with 14 minutes to play.
Temple's Cech found the back of the net four minutes later to make it 7-4 and Frengs made it a two goal game with an unassisted goal with 20:07 to play. Cech struck again at 16:56, pulling Temple to within one goal. A frustrated Richmond squad began to swing and an ensuing Mandy Friend yellow card gave Temple an extra player advantage and just the momentum that it needed to reclaim the game.
Frengs wasted no time capitalizing on the extra player opportunity, tying the game at seven at the 14 minute mark. The Spiders refused to quit and Furstenburg battled her way into the eight meter to put Richmond back on top (8-7) with a free position goal at 12:29; however, that would be the final goal of the game for Richmond as Temple answered with two straight goals to earn its second straight win.
Richards found Capaldo, who banged a shot off the post into the upper left-hand corner of the goal for the equalizer at 12:09 and Yemm found Richards for the game-winner at 6:04. Temple was able to hold on for the remainder of the game, though four turnovers by the teams in the final minute could have resulted in an overtime period.
Spider keeper Jackie Swansburg stopped seven Owl shots, while Temple goaltender Bridget McMullan had eight saves. Richmond finished with an advantage in draw controls (10-9), as well as ground balls (16-15) and shots (26-23).
The Spiders (8-5, 2-1 in A-10) will resume action next Sunday with an A-10 match-up in Massachusetts. Opening draw with the Minutewomen is scheduled for noon. Follow the Spiders at RichmondSpiders.com.
