UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond field hockey team lost to No. 16 ranked American 4-0 on Sunday in the final game of the Spider Classic at Crenshaw Field.
The Spiders fell behind 3-0 before the half, with two of the goals coming on penalty corners with one goal coming on a redirection and one off of a rebound.
"We played a very solid team today," Richmond head coach Gina Lucido said. "We had a game plan that we were going to put into effect, and we just kind of really lost some momentum with that, and American gained a lot of momentum converting on their corners.
"We were really were just defensive minded for a good part of the game," Lucido said. "That's what happens against great competition. It's really hard to come out of a hole and we really dug a hole that was too deep for us to make some headway back."
Junior Alex Malatesta led the Spiders with three shots, two of which were on goal. Sophomore Sarah Blythe-Wood, who had two goals on Saturday, took two shots Sunday.
"I'm pleased that the girls came out in the second half, and had a good 15 minute spurt when we were really attacking," Lucido said. "You have to play 70 minutes to really expect to win a game. We were not the better team on the field today. Do I believe we can be the better team and great things come along. Yes, I do. This is a lesson we're going to learn from."
American out-shot the Spiders 15-7. Richmond junior goalkeeper Becca Weaver made four saves in goal.
Denise Infante scored two goals and had an assist, duplicating her performance from the Eagles victory over Radford on Saturday. Irene Schickhardt scored her second goal in as many days and Christine Fingerhuth also scored a goal.
Richmond dropped to 1-1 on the season, after having defeated Hofstra 3-2 on Saturday. The Spiders play at No. 8 ranked Virginia on Thursday at 6 p.m., before returning home to host Delaware on Saturday at noon.
"We have two huge opponents coming up, Virginia and Delaware in this next week and we're going to charge ahead Tuesday at practice and get ready for that," Lucido said.
