RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond field hockey team lost by one goal for the third-straight game with a 2-1 loss to city-rival Virginia Commonwealth on Friday night at Cary Street Field.
VCU freshman Merel Kroon had a goal and an assist to spark the Rams (3-1) past Richmond.
"This is another really tough hit on the chin for us tonight," Richmond head coach Gina Lucido said. "We are so very much growing and finding that entire team effort."
Kroon opened the scoring 21:51 into the match when she spun to her left and uncorked a ball that found the cage from 16 yards out.
The score remained that way until the 60th minute, when Kroon took a ball from the endline, left of the cage, and threaded a centering pass to a streaking Rebecca Sullivan, who punched the ball into the goal from five yards out for a 2-0 advantage.
The Spiders were quick to strike back, answering with a goal by junior Alex Malatesta with 9:36 remaining. Richmond mounted several offensive strikes in the waning minutes, including a goal that was disallowed, but VCU was able to hold on for the victory.
`VCU has a game plan they executed incredibly well," Richmond head coach Gina Lucido said. "They played with incredible heart and got the outcome that they were after."
Richmond junior goalkeeper Becca Weaver made four saves in net.
Richmond will host Miami of Ohio on Sunday at noon at Crenshaw Field.
"We look forward to Miami to compete and turn the corner for this team," Lucido said.
