UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond junior Ryan Metzroth was tabbed the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week in baseball following his torrid season-opening weekend in Jacksonville. The right fielder batted .583 and had a hit in every game, including the first two home runs of his career. The award marks the first weekly A-10 honor of Metzroth's career.
After missing all last season with an injury, the Agoura Hills, Calif. native belted a pair of homers and drove in six of Richmond's 23 runs in a wild, 23-16 win over UNC-Wilmington Friday in the opening game of the JU Invitational in Jacksonville. He also walked twice, reaching base seven times and scored five times in the game.
Richmond was leading just 18-16 in the ninth when Metzroth drew a bases-loaded walk with a full-count and two outs. The walk kept the inning alive for Evan Stehle, who belted a grand slam in the next at bat to ice the Spiders' first victory - and the first victory in the career of head coach Mark McQueen.
Metzroth finished the weekend batting .583 (seven-for-12), struck out just twice and drew a team-leading four walks. His slugging percentage after three games stands at an eye-popping 1.083.
Richmond returns to action Tuesday, hosting William & Mary at Pitt Field. The Spiders' home-opener starts at 2:30 p.m. with live video streaming and Gametracker available at RichmondSpiders.com.
