Second-Half Spider Surge Not Enough To Get Past Towson

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Junior Mandy Friend put in five goals and added an assist to lead the Spiders with six points as they fell to Towson, 17-12. Allison Furstenburg recorded four points including a pair of goals and a pair of assists for Richmond. Hillary Fratzke and Jacie Kendall both recorded hat tricks for the Tigers as they move to 6-2 on the season.
The Spiders struggled to find the net in the first half of play, scoring just five goals to Towson's 10 in the first 30 minutes of play. The Tigers went on a five-goal run to put them ahead of Richmond 9-2 with 12:47 to play in the first half. The Spiders stopped the run with a goal from Allison Furstenburg, her first of two on the day.
Richmond was able to put one more goal in before the end of the half with Mandy Friend third notch of the day. The junior put in a free-position shot with just 55 seconds left in the first to cut the Tigers' lead to just five at the half.
The Tigers continued their attack in the second half with two straight goals from Nikki Marcinik to start off the 30 minute period. Richmond answered the short run with a goal from Claire Cunniff assisted by Furstenburg. Cunniff scored her lone goal of the day just eight minutes into the second half.
After being down by as many as seven, Richmond brought the score back within five when Jules Nicola found the back of the net off a helper from Jenna Hubbard to make it 12-7 with 19:50 left to play. From that point on, scoring went back and forth between the two teams. Richmond tied Towson's seven goals in the second half, falling to the Tigers 17-12 at the end of the game.
The Spiders had six scorers in the game. Lexie Marrocco put in two goals while Cunniff, Nicola and Erin Kennedy each added a goal a piece. Richmond is now 2-7 on the season heading into Atlantic 10 conference play. The Spiders will host Massachusetts Friday, March 28 at UR Stadium in downtown Richmond for a 7:30 p.m. ET game.
