NORFOLK, Va. - The Richmond field hockey team lost to No. 20 ranked Old Dominion 3-1 on Saturday.
Junior Megan Thompson scored the Spiders' only goal of the game, which cut Old Dominion's lead to 2-1 less than two minutes into the second half. The Monarchs tacked on an insurance goal in the 45th minute off of a penalty corner.
"A slow start took its toll," Richmond head coach Gina Lucido said. "We played our game in the second half and couldn't catch-up. Bright spots on the day were season debuts from Sara Reese, Emily Straniero and Betsy Herr. Seniors Alex Malatesta and Becca Weaver played with absolute fierceness and poise. They definitely kept us in the game and displayed their Spider pride for 70 minutes."
Thompson's goal was her second of the season and the 15th of her career. She now has 34 career points for the Spiders.
Weaver made a season-high 10 saves in goal for Richmond. Old Dominion keeper Kelly Driscoll had four saves.
Richmond returns to action on Friday when the Spiders host James Madison at 3:30 p.m.
