UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond field hockey team took No. 7 ranked James Madison to overtime, before a goal 1:33 into the extra session allowed the Dukes to escape Crenshaw Field with a 3-2 victory Friday.
Richmond drops to 1-5 overall, but three of those losses have come to ranked opponents, including two by one goal.
The Spiders were playing with a new system installed earlier in the week that adds a player in the back, but also has the forwards and midfielders play in a more attacking style.
"We put an entire new system in that we haven't been using, we wanted to play to our strengths and it did work," Richmond head coach Gina Lucido said. "We responded against a very tough opponent. We showed we can compete with whoever we want to."
The Spiders were down 1-0 just 2:09 into the game, but instead of giving in to the Dukes, Richmond struck back with a goal from Grace Krafte in the 13th minute off an assist from Katelin Peterson.
James Madison took advantage of a errant pass to quickly counter in the 46th minute with a goal from Melissa Stefaniak.
Then in the 60th minute, the Spiders peppered the James Madison cage with two shots and were awarded a penalty stroke, which senior Alex Malatesta converted to tie the game.
"The girls hung in there, we brought this game to overtime and unfortunately we couldn't finish and they did first," Lucido said.
The overtime goal came just 1:33 in, when Ashley Walls took a shot that was saved, but she gathered the rebound and fired another shot that found the back of the net.
"It was a broken play and when you have the caliber of player that James Madison has and that happens, that's going to be a goal," Lucido said.
Richmond senior goalkeeper Becca Weaver made 12 saves in goal.
"Becca just played a tremendous game, she just came up with so many big saves for us today," Lucido said.
The Spiders return to action on Sunday when they play William & Mary at 1 p.m.
