WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -Junior Sarah Blythe-Wood's breakaway goal in overtime gave the Richmond field hockey team a 4-3 win over William & Mary on Sunday.
The Spiders led 3-1 in the second half, before William & Mary scored a goal in the 49th minute and then tied the game with 4:14 remaining in regulation to force the overtime.
Blythe-Wood got a breaksway that caused the goalkeeper to come out and challenge her, so she tried tapping the ball around the keeper. The ball was deflected, but Blythe-Wood was able to get to the ball and finish a hard shot into the back of the cage for the win.
"This was truly a team victory," Richmond head coach Gina Lucido said. "William & Mary made us play for every minute to earn this win. Our program continues to learn valuable lessons through each game, today we showed some needed grit and doing whatever it takes to find success."

William & Mary tied the score in the 15th minute, but the Spiders' regained the lead when freshman Katelin Peterson scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season on an assist from Sarah Schrott in the 25th minute.
The Spiders made it 3-1 less than four minutes into the second half when Schrott scored her second goal of the season off a rebound.
William & Mary scored two goals in the final 22 minutes or regulation to force overtime, but Blythe-Wood's goal gave Richmond the win.
Senior goalkeeper Becca Weaver made nine saves for the Spiders.
"Our defense was anchored by Becca Weaver poise under constant pressure in the final 12 min of the game," Lucido said. "It was so satisfying to watch the team celebrate with such passion. Spider pride is gaining momentum.
