AMHERST, Mass. - Sophomore Katelin Peterson scored her 11th goal of the season and Richmond remained unscored upon in Atlantic 10 play as the Spiders defeated No. 16 ranked Massachusetts on Friday.
This was the second-straight year that head coach Gina Lucido and the Spiders have knocked off a ranked team. The Atlantic 10-leading Spiders improved to 10-7 overall and 4-0 in the Atlantic 10, having won four-straight and six of the last seven. The Spiders have outscored their four Atlantic 10 opponents 19-0 and outshot them 69-12.
Richmond has now won 58 of the last 63 games against Atlantic 10 competition with two regular-season conference matches remaining.
Peterson scored her 23rd-career goal with 17:50 remaining when she dribbled in from the left side and beat the keeper one-on-one.
Richmond out-shot UMass 10-5 on the game. Spider goalkeeper Jacki Raithel made one save to record her fifth shutout of the season.
"Playing 4 games in seven days and finishing with a win over #16 UMass is a huge credit to our fitness and our team mentality in the final leg of the regular season," Richmond head coach Gina Lucido said. "Our ability to shut-out a fourth A-10 opponent is directly credited to outstanding team defensive play led by Jess Weidner, Emily Stanerio, Catherine Ostoich, and Michelle Weaver. Becky White had a standout performance in the midfield and made big plays for the Spiders.
"Katelin Peterson were a lethal duo in the success of our forward press," Lucido said. "I am so proud of this team and their ability to rise this challenge today. We are relentless in our mission to bring that trophy back to Richmond."
Richmond will look to clinch its sixth Atlantic 10 regular-season title in the last eight years next weekend when it heads to Philadelphia to play Saint Joseph's on Friday and Temple on Sunday to close out the regular season.
The Atlantic 10 Tournament is Nov. 6-7 back in Amherst, Mass.
