CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Junior Sam Beach shot a 4-under-par 68 in the third and final round to win the individual title at 3-under 213 and pace the Richmond men's golf team to the Frank Landrey Invitational team title on Tuesday at Spring Creek Golf Club.
The Spiders had three players finish in the top-5 with freshman Daniel Walker taking third (E) and senior Robert Lindstrom tying for fifth (+2) as Richmond shot a 2-over-par 866 to win its 16th tournament title by 14 shots.
"The guys came here looking to win the tournament and they did a great job of getting the job done," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "We had gotten off to good starts at our first two tournaments, but had not been able to finish. We definitely did a good job of finishing today."
Richmond shot a 4-over 292 in the first round, a 4-under 284 in the second round and a 2-over 290 in the final round to give fifth-year head coach Adam Decker his third team title with the Spiders.
Beach was five shots off the lead entering the final round, tied for 11th at 145 after rounds of 1-over 73 and even-par 72. Beach's teammate Walker was tied for first with William & Mary's Brandon Parker at 140, but Beach shot a career-low round of 68 to climb all the way to the medalist trophy.
"Sam has been playing tremendous golf this fall," Decker said. "It is a testament to his hard work in the offseason, he's definitely seeing the results out there on the course."
The Glen Allen, Va. native became the 20th Spider to win a tournament and the fifth under Decker. Beach has finished in the top-10 in all three tournaments this fall, including back-to-back top-4 finishes. Four of his nine rounds this fall are under par.
"Today I just made some putts when I needed to, went at certain pins that I knew I could make birdie at played a little careful for other ones," Beach said. "I knew when I started the day I was five back, all I was doing is trying to help the team a good score. It ended up working out for me."
Walker shot a 1-under 71 in the first round and a 3-under 69 in the second round to put himself in a tie with William & Mary's Parker for the lead. A 4-over 76 in the final round gave Walker a 2-over 216 for the tournament, three shots behind Beach and two shots out of second place.
Lindstrom notched his third-straight top-15 finish, tying for fifth at 218. After an opening-round 75, Lindstrom shot a 2-under-par 70 and a 1-over 73.
Junior Michael Shrader tied for 24th at 223 (73-73-77) and freshman Nick Austin tied for 27th at 224 (77-74-73). Richond junior Zak Kozuchowski tied for 37th at 227 (72-76-79).
The Spiders have a quick turnaround, heading to Philadelphia this Saturday and Sunday for the Big 5 Invitational, which they won in the fall of 2005.
